A Better Way to Invest: Finding Stability in a Volatile World

I’ve been investing for more than three decades, and in that time, I’ve tried almost every strategy imaginable: value and growth investing, market timing, options, day trading, and commodities. I learned the hard way that these methods are often either a slow, “wait and hope” game or a high-stakes gamble. After losing money in the 1998 dot-com bubble and again in the 2008 financial crisis, I came to a powerful, hard-won realization: There had to be a better, more reliable way to invest.

That path revealed itself in 2008 with the discovery of Closed-End Funds (CEFs). I restructured  my entire portfolio toward CEFs, abandoning the stress and anxiety of predicting interest rate changes, economic direction, and geopolitical events. CEFs are uniquely designed to provide a consistent, steady stream of income in the form of regular monthly or quarterly dividends.

This strategy is for those who value income over hope or speculation. The resulting dividend stream, which can yield a safe and reasonable 10% or more annually (based on November 2025 market conditions), can be reinvested to benefit from power of compounding (doubling capital in just over seven years, according to the Rule of 72) or used immediately as reliable cash flow.

Of course, no investment is without risk. The market value of CEFs will fluctuate, and this is not a strategy for those seeking the spectacular, high-growth returns seen in a handful of “star” stocks. It is, instead, a strategy focused on steady, predictable income and capital preservation.

It is remarkable that during the financial crises of 2008, 2014, and 2021, while the market value of CEFs dropped dramatically, most maintained their dividend payouts. The market values eventually recovered, but the income stream  remained resilient—a testament to the unique strength of the CEF structure.

My previous work, including the foundational book “Let Your Money Work for You, The Wonderful World of CEFs”, aims to lift the veil on the mysteries and misconceptions about CEFs, while my latest book, “Dividends Rule, The Secrets of CEFs”  is the advanced guide to building and protecting a resilient high-yield portfolio using Closed-End Funds (CEFs).

With six successfully authored and published books over the past five years—exploring topics from innovation and the benefits of uncertainty to planning for success—my mission is to demystify complex subjects, making them accessible to the everyday investor.
